new year's resolution

to spend 20-30 minutes each day practising my handwriting.

i hate my handwriting. i've had crappy, unreadable writing for thirty years now, and i figure that's a quarter century too long. folks online claim that 15-20 minutes a day of practice can get you results in a few weeks, and that sounds way too good to be true, but easy enough to put to the test.

more pen stuff

Max found an old pen i had forgotten i had, a pilot varsity disposable fountain pen. they used to sell those in one single store here in town — the local community college's bookstore — but stopped carrying them years ago.

for a fountain pen that's been sitting around untouched (with the cap on) for, oh, two or three years now, it sure started up writing very neatly, no problems or complaints at all.

Feeling a little Prousty

although wasn't it a kind of cookie, for him? me, i had forgotten what fountain pen ink smelled like.

i'm sure that's not right; there must be dozens of different kinds of inks used in fountain pens, each with different smells. the black ink i use in my japanese-made pen today surely can't be that much like the blue ink i used in my grade school-issued, german-made fountain pen all those years and years ago. but it smells the same, and until i smelled it, i had forgotten that fountain pen inks have a smell at all.

high tech luddism

this househould of mine may be falling prey to some sort of pseudo-luddism, and i think i may be the source of it.

sort of weird, for a home with two computer geeks in it, and me earning my living as a programmer no less. but hear me out.

Apologies are in order

My apologies to Eq and euclid for taking unforgivably long to approve their comments. I plead stupidity — I wasn't watching the right part of Drupal's administrivial UI, and wasn't getting sent emails about things that needed my attention, either. I found out the hard way, and pledge to do better in the future.

multiblogging

looking for some software to copy blog entries between blogs, so as to copy over stuff from my LiveJournal to here. nothing seems well developed to handle that. the entry below ("spam") i copied semi-manually using a firefox plugin called ScribeFire, but if i had to use that, i'd end up only sporadically copying occasional entries because it's a PITA.

plus, scribefire doesn't seem to speak Drupal's tags. that's unworkable.

tomorrow i'll try out Flock, which seems to be another firefox plugin. maybe it'll be better.

spam

for a domain that's been around so many years, insecurities.org gets remarkably little junk mail. only a handful of emails daily.

Front Page

No, i won't apologize for the front page's content being considerably shorter than the stylesheet used to display it. I just won't, and you'll just have to deal with that.

Learning Drupal

This site's slowly growing up as i learn how to configure Drupal better. Still much to do, though, and the byzantine permissions system isn't helping me climb the learning curve.

I've got a "primary links" menu enabled that looks really nice — if you're logged in. I want to enable it for everybody, even anonymous guests with no user account. How to do it? Still learning...

trying out the blog

so this is my new blog. wish i could import all my old LJ entries.

wonder why i can't see blogs in the navigation list?
