Some screenshots of Ubuntu Karmic (9.10) Netbook Remix.
accessories2.png: this is your typical application-launcher menu, part of what passes for the "desktop". down the left is a stack of similar app-launcher menus, each with different contents. to its right, a list of applications in this menu. along the very top goes a MacOS-inspired "menu bar", mostly a huge "system tray" for status icons to drop into. at its far left is a row of icons for currently running applications so you can switch between them. in this instance, only two — the app-launcher itself (always running) and firefox.
accessories.png: a bit of a misclick, since most of the screen got hidden by the screenshot-application icon... still, you can see one of the system notification pop-up messages in the top right. that one says the wireless network's disconnected, since i only just booted up and it hasn't had time to reconnect yet.
favorites.png: the "favorites" menu contains copies of launchers available elsewhere. you can select and customize which ones appear in this menu, the default menu to appear when you call up the app-launcher "desktop".
folders.png: the folders menu is basically just a listing of your file mnager's "bookmarks" contents. you can quickly launch a file manager on anyh of them from here. from such a file mnager, you can edit the bookmarks in turn.
fm-tabs.png: what such a file manager looks like, by default. fairly bog-standard Ubuntu-issued gnome file manager. note the "directories in tabs" feature.
maximized.png: most every app opens in window-maximized mode by default, even some dialog boxes you might prefer not to do that. i think there's a system daemon auto-maximizing newly created windows, in fact. you might think this'd be a nuisance, but the screen's so small it mostly just saves you the mouse click to maximize the window yourself. in fact, sometimes you wish things would open fullscreen by default.
fullscreen.png: fullscreen means full screen. that grey bar along the top is firefox itself refusing to believe "full" means the whole thing. this is how i end up running most apps that can run so; of course, that also means i'm mostly single-tasking. that's okay, un-fullscreening and switching to another app is easy and quick enough.
